Amy Bloom's novel Away tells the intimate story of Lillian Leyb who escapes to America when her family, including her husband and young daughter, is destroyed in a Russian pogrom.

So she leaves for New York City and she finds her cousin Frieda who is willing to let her stay as a boarder. Lillian gets a dollar a day for wages minus the rent and charge for breakfast. She moves up the social ladder when she begins work at the Goldfadn Theatre.
