EVAN BRAIN: ADVENTURES OF A DELUSIONAL KID SUPERHERO

by Eve Becker-Doyle and Evan “Brain” Doyle

Becker Doyle and Associates Publishing

ISBN: 978-0-9794716-0-5

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's...EVAN BRAIN!
by Jennifer Brown

Eve Becker-Doyle must have had her hands full with her son, Evan. Convinced he was a “kid superhero” out to save the world, Evan was one of those kids who got fun labels from his teachers such as “recalcitrant.” So what is a mom/writer to do when she has a “recalcitrant,” super-creative superhero on her hands? She co-authors a book with him, of course!

Evan Brain! is a strangely humorous book, showcasing Evan’s antics over the years from both sides – his and his mom’s. Part comic book, part confessional, Evan Brain! is both amusing and endearing; as a mom, you can’t help but love Evan just a little bit for his unique take on the world, yet still feel sorry for poor Eve who had to take it in the chops from Evan’s teachers on a regular basis.

The highlight of this book is definitely the artwork, created by Evan himself. The cartoons are simple and perhaps a little Calvin and Hobbes-ish and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. Between the writing and the drawing, one thing’s for sure – this kid superhero’s talent runneth over. I would be delighted to see more humorous comics come from Evan Doyle in the future.

Overall, although it’s difficult to tell who the target audience is on this book (Is it for adults? Kids? Somewhere in between?), Evan Brain! is a pretty entertaining little book – one that can be read in one sitting and will absolutely be enjoyed.
