Rocking
by Kris Underwood

Asleep-
You lay heavy
In my arms
Breathing steadily

In the gingham chair
We rock, we rock
Rhythmically
To Mozart's concertos.

Asleep-
I dare not move
I lie still as shadows
Listening to your steady breathing
Falling into rhythm
With the concertos
I've memorized.

Rocking back and forth
Through night and morning
Sleep to wake
Sleep to wake

You lay heavy
In my arms

Breathing steadily.

Kris Underwood is a transplant from the Midwest to the East Coast, where she has lived on and off for seven years. Someday, she'd like to rise to the challenge of writing only Form Poems. Until then, her writing can be found on her blog, Writing In The Mountains.  Other published work can be found at  The Whole Mom, and forthcoming in MotherVerse.
