Sleep is a wonderful thing. It is a time to relax, recharge, and re-energize. Sleep is essential to life for people of all ages, yet our society often treats sleep as a luxury rather than a necessity. Stress, anxiety, nightmares, fears, moods, health, depression, behavior problems, and learning are just a few of the areas of life affected by sleep. When we get enough, things run smoothly, but when we don’t, problems arise in so many areas.

The term “Sleep Like a Baby” is very misleading. Babies and new parents quickly learn that sleep becomes a treasured commodity. It is something to work on and work towards so that everyone from baby, to siblings, to parents can all be at their best. Sleep and sleeping patterns are learned and need to become routine.

According to Elizabeth Pantley, author of The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers (2005 McGraw-Hill), “When children do not sleep well, neither do their parents.” Sleep, like many other aspects of life, is based upon habit. Habits take 21 – 30 days to be learned or unlearned, and sleep changes fall into this category. There is no doubt that young babies wake and need to be fed at night, and over time, this becomes a habit. As children move from baby stage to toddler stage this habit needs to be unlearned for the benefit of the children and the parents.

In her book, Elizabeth offers many real and practical ways for parents to slowly and positively change the sleep habits of the family. As Elizabeth exhibits through her many authentic life examples, stories, and interviews, there is much more to sleep patterns than learning to sleep through the night. There are many different sleep situations that families deal with, and she addresses these issues while providing a variety of solutions for them. Some areas the book deals with are bedtime battles, napping, wake up times, sleeping arrangements, routines, and parents sleep patterns.

While The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers (2005 McGraw-Hill) is geared for parents of children with sleep problems, I think it is an essential read for all parents. Elizabeth’s ideas and advice provide parents with solutions to many other issues such as stress, time management, and relationship issues. Elizabeth shared a story with me on an amazing thank you letter she received from a reader. She thanked Elizabeth for her second child. By using the No-Cry Sleep Solutions this family was able to make the transition from pure exhaustion to being able to find the time and energy for creating the future.
