REVIEW
Delightful Read Anything but Accidental Sophie’s got a pretty good life. She’s got a good – no, strike that! – a great job as an events coordinator for prestigious McCarthy Hughes. She’s got an assistant/ultra-fabulous friend Cal, who totally has her back. She’s in line for a promotion. And she’s got a great shoe collection. But Sophie’s life is missing…something. Ever since her father died unexpectedly (when Sophie was a young teen), her life has been very controlled. Almost sterile. Definitely without toe-curling passion. And no romance. But when Sophie’s perfect life is interrupted by the unexpected death of her lifelong best friend and the inheritance of her friend’s small children, everything is turned upside down. Not knowing the first thing about how to raise little ones, Sophie is forced to take a leave of absence from work (there goes her promotion…) and a hiatus from one very interested handsome young American named Jake (there goes her boyfriend potential…) and take the girls in (there goes her couch…). But Sophie begrudgingly lives up to her promise to her best friend and gives the girls a home – on a temporary basis, mind you! Little does she realize how much those kids are going to steal her heart away. She herself doesn’t even realize it’s happened until she finds the kids’ sketchy father, Louis, and must face losing them to him. What’s worse – after just a few weeks with Louis, it looks like Sophie could lose a heck of a lot more to the guy than she ever imagined possible. Rowan Coleman’s novel, The Accidental Mother, takes readers on a journey through Sophie’s reluctant role as mother to two children and her own personal growth as she discovers what in her life really is as important as it all seems (hint: it ain’t the expensively gorgeous pink boots). Coleman does an amazing job of intertwining light-hearted humor with heavy-handed sadness and of making the reader fall in love with all the right characters (OK, and sometimes the wrong ones, too. I was pulling for Jake, I really was.), while at the same time exploring tough issues. Would you be willing to do all Sophie did for the sake of love? Could you put your life on hold to honor your best friend’s dying wish – even if you found out your best friend had been hiding some pretty major things from you? And what exactly would you do if your life were to be turned upside down by a couple of children who desperately needed you? The Accidental Mother is charming and fun, lightly romantic, and introspective. A fun by-the-beach read for the summer, Coleman’s latest foray into fiction is a delight that, my friends, is no accident. Jennifer Brown is a freelance writer in Liberty, Missouri.
