Before I Knew
by Martha T. Robinson

Before I knew a child grew
within me, it aborted.

Why be given a child only
to lose it, before the yearning

for the tiny body, tight fists,
sucking mouth, kicking feet?

Bright sunlight fails to warm
empty arms that clasp each other.

One red rose on a brown bush
whispers hope to my stunned heart.

Martha T. Robinson is a retired special educator who continues to teach. As the mother of two adult children, and the grandmother of three, she finds daily inspiration for her poetry. “Before I Knew” is the first poem she ever wrote, and the first one to be published.
