Reviews of mom fiction authors:

-Carole Holden, Ultimate Terror
-Jean Darby, Journey out of Darkness

Reviewed by Tracy Lyn Moland

For this issue a few of the books I reviewed were fiction rather than how-to guides for mothers. Ultimate Terror by Carole Holden and Journey Out of Darkness by Jean Darby reminded me that we, as mothers who write, are all extremely different. Much of what we have reviewed to this date are books written based upon experiences in parenting. Both of these books stem from a love of and career in writing. I think this a great reminder to our readers that as mothers we are incredibly talented and can (and should) write about anything and everything – as long as we are passionate about it.

Ultimate Terror (iUniverse, 2006, ISBN-13: 978-0595386802) by Carole Holden is a fantastic and action-filled novel. Holden pulled upon her experience as a professor, current events and a unique writing style to create a book I could not put down until I was done. Told through the alternating eyes of the main characters the story was portrayed from all angles. I highly recommend this book as a learning opportunity, an example of great writing and an escape with excitement and a little bit of romance.

After reading Journey Out of Darkness (Synergy Books, 2006, ISBN-13: 978-1933538419), I decided not to review it. I had a difficult time finishing the book due to its disturbing storyline that included child abuse (physical and sexual) as well as a step into Satanism. While I understood the final message was to be that goodness can triumph, I felt that the tone and message of the book was extremely dark. The reason I decided to include it here is that the book has a holding power that is extremely negative. I have found myself thinking about the horror of some of the events and the evil characteristics of the mother in the book. I have awoken at night dreaming of the book. The book is written for young children and whether well written or not, I recommend that this book be passed over and should not be read by children or teens.
