Should Have Been
by Christina Weigand
Should have been a prom dress
Instead it was maternity clothes
Should have been a prom
Instead it was a baby shower
Should have been a trip to Florida
With the band and chorus
Instead it was a trip to New York City
With Mom and Dad
Should have been a senior yearbook
Instead it was a baby book
Should have been a diploma
Instead it was a G.E.D.
Should have been a graduation ceremony
Instead it was a Christening
Should have been her going to college and embracing
The beginning of a new life
Instead it was business school after embracing
A new little life
Should have found herself first
Instead she was found by sharing with that new life
As she gazes into those small eyes
All the should have beens
Fade away into the mist
The promises of the instead ofs
Burst brilliantly like starlight
Before her eyes.
What should have been a life
Discovered on her own
Instead becomes a life discovered
By sharing with her child
My daughter with her daughter
Something so small will learn about life
As she teaches us about life
All of us teachers
All of us students
In this circle of life.
