Mom 101
by Diana F. Eikrem
The sink is clogged, the dishes piled high
I’m not sure what to do.
The baby’s crawling across a floor that’s
Covered with water and goo.
It’s almost five and dinner’s not done,
The stove went on the blink.
The skillet-dinner I’d planned instead
Has fallen in the sink.
While racking my brain to figure out
What else I could whip up,
My cleverly amused bundle of joy
Has uncapped his sip-cup.
With a gurgling sink, a stone-cold stove,
And now one juice-stained son,
I call the only person I know
Who can help me get things done.
In tears I rattle off my plight,
And baby joins the wailing.
I hang up the phone, slide to the floor,
And cringe at my own failing.
My rescue arrives in no time flat
With tools, mops, bags, and more.
In less than an hour the jobs are done
Even down to the sparkling floor.
While dinner simmers on the stove
And baby’s squeaky clean,
I stare in total disbelief
At all I have just seen.
I ask, “How did you do all that—
Where did you learn it from?”
The reply was short, simple, and sweet:
“I learned by being your
Mom.”
