The Alchemy of Publishing: Turning Mom Writers into Gold

by Tracy Lyn Moland

The alchemist magically combines elements, imbues them with spirit, adds time and space, and attempts to transmute them into gold. Publisher Nancy Cleary is a modern-day alchemist with a secret formula for turning authors into gold...

“Hello Mom Writers!” begins a letter from Nancy Cleary about her golden creation – the Mom-Writers Publishing Cooperative.

“I love what I do - I have been designing books, packaging products, and promoting creative individuals for 17 years. Since launching my publishing company over 7 years ago, I have learned a great deal about the industry, and about building a brand and a powerful author.

I made the decision in January of 2005 to use my talent, my experiences, and my extensive network to empower a group of mom writers and provide an unprecedented level of support, encouragement, and cooperation among authors,” she continues.

In the last year Nancy has brought her dream to life. She has over 15 published and successful authors. Join us in this issue’s cover story as we celebrate Nancy Cleary’s Mom-Writers Publishing Cooperative from the mom writers own words! With quotes from the authors and from the books find celebration, real life, and inspiration for you!

Who are we...

Mom writers are real life moms who face real life situations – as Caroline Poser presents in her book MotherMorphosis: Vignettes about the Transformation Into and Within Motherhood. “I knew I had to snap out of the doldrums and recoup my joie de vivre just as much for me as for my children. I had become a human doing (as opposed to a human being): on autopilot...watching life go by on the TV screen, caught up in the bad news of 9-11 and it’s aftermath.”

Getting Started...

“Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a woman...

She was a stay-at-home mom to two crazy little boys, wife to a busy man, and owner of her own marketing communications business.

In order to escape the chaos, she had come to know as life, she started to write about it.” She is Kathryn S. Mahoney and she is the author of One Madcap Mom’s Thoughts on Motherhood, Marriage & Burnt Meatloaf.

Living the Chaos one Day at a Time...

“Was this what mommyhood was like?” Julie Watson Smith found herself asking. “In an effort to answer these questions, she started asking her mama-friends to describe their ‘run of the mill’ day. The answers humbled and inspired her.” Julie took the answers and complied them in her book, Mommyhood Diaries: Living the Chaos One Day at a Time.

Business and Moms...

All Mom Entrepreneurs know it's a challenge to raise their family and run a business, but hardly anyone talks about how they get it done! In The Business Mom Guide Book, Terrilee Harrison will share stories of moms who are getting it done. Their insights, tips, failures, and success stories will be published so we can help each other.

Connection...

“Connection parenting is parenting through connection instead of coercion, through love instead of fear”, says Pam Leo, in her book Connection Parenting.  Just as it is crucial for parents to connect to their children, mom writers must connect with their readers. Many books try to dictate rules or force beliefs upon their readers. Nancy Cleary works with authors who connect to their audiences thus creating loyal readers and repeat authors.

Love and Money...

Being a Mom and being a writer is hard work. Rather than set hours as many writers have Moms can be found writing at all hours of the day. According to Alana Morales in Domestically Challenged “You know the corny saying ‘Do what you love and the money will follow’? It may often seem like the money is way behind you, but it will eventually catch up with you as long as you keep your head up and follow the correct path.”

Encouragement for Others...

At age 11, Maureen Focht went through the process of watching her mother become a paranoid schizophrenic. She witnessed her mother change from a beautiful, loving person to one she barely recognized. In addition, the author describes her father's ultimate commitment to his wife, who remained ill for over 40 years. Maureen’s book, Silent Heroes, explores the emotional journey and the healthy, although painful, emotional process that is necessary for families to "come to terms" with and find healing regarding the mental disorder of their loved one.

The Future...

As Iris Waichler finishes her book, her words complete my cover story...(please replace infertility with whatever you need to complete...) “My hope and wish for you is that, wherever your own personal infertility journey ultimately takes you, it is a place you can accept and look forward from. Whatever our outcomes, we all need to find a future direction where we want and choose to go. My wish is that, wherever this leads for you, it ultimately offers you some sense of peace, belonging, and fulfillment.”

Final words... from Nancy Cleary – the chemist...”Around a glowing nucleus of creative energy and passion, is a God-given talent that helps us to fulfill this purpose. When that talent is "put out there in the ether" everything that results becomes like electrons, spinning around the nucleus, increasing the power of the overall mass, and creating a magnetic pull toward others with the same purpose.

The alchemic equation for author gold is collaboration, creativity, and cooperation...”
