REVIEW
Peanut Butter, Playdates & Prozac
Book Review
As I lay in bed crying from laughing so hard and reading excerpts to my husband, I knew I had found the perfect Mom book. After reading Schuster’s comment, ‘“Because I said so” is reason enough’ in the section entitled Your Mother Said You’d Understand When You Had kids of Your Own I knew I had found a Mother writer who spoke my language. Author Arlene Schuster, mother of two from Illinois, tells the story of Motherhood as it really is. Rather than feeling like you need to change how you do things, you feel welcomed in as a part of the real Mom crowd. According to Schuster, “It’s time to take the mask off motherhood and expose it for what it really is…a fun, scary, maddening, boring, wonderful and unpredictable journey.” With pieces entitled Jobs I’m Uniquely Qualified for After Raising Children (Union Negotiator, Magician to name a few), Lies You Tell Yourself and Others, or Never in a Million Years you will find yourself laughing along as you remember being in those exact same positions. The book is rounded out with comparisons between New Mom and Old Mom’s, toddlers and teens; actual conversations with her children and some wonderful Mom sing alongs – my favorite being Mother in Hell (to the tune of Farmer in the Dell). For the section entitled Why I Deserve a Sticker… describing reasons Mom deserves a sticker for a job well done, I’d like to add one. Arlene, I would like to give you a whole pack of stickers for writing such a fun and wonderful book. I highly recommend all Moms read this one (and keep a stack handy to give their friends when they need to smile). Thanks Arlene!
