The Truth Behind the Mommy Wars Book Review
Miriam Peskowitz has successfully taken on a challenge that all parents, children and employers face – The Mommy Wars. However in her book she goes beyond what has often been considered the “Mommy War” – that between stay at home moms and work out of the home moms. As Peskowitz describes in excellent anecdotes, examples, statistics, studies and personal experiences there is no one definition of Mommy. In my mind the word Mommy is synonymous with working. There is no way to be a mom and not be busy. With billions of Moms around the world it’s impossible to either define the role or compare. I work from home – some weeks I travel or have deadlines and put in 60 hours of work; other weeks I am able to go on field trips with my children and take them to their events. If I can’t even define my own role how can I compete in mommy wars? Even if we find a definition for the moment, our role as Mommy changes on a regular basis. The workforce is also experiencing great changes with the retirement of baby boomers and the changing dynamics of society. Peskowitz covers many of these situations in her book – are Mother’s opting out, what do they really want, are they in the middle, what do they do with their time and even families where the Dad stays at home. In bringing a very realistic view to a real issue, The Truth Behind the Mommy Wars is a must read for not only Moms but also anyone who is in business.
