Acorns
by Jacqueline Jules

The gray squirrel in my yard
can sniff nuts under frozen ground,
dig, then hold lost treasure in its paws.
If only I could retrieve what
has been lost to me:
a stormy evening, cuddling
a trembling toddler on the couch;
a small hand touching my cheek
like a grown man in love—
these moments have scurried
faster than the bushy tail in my trees.
Like acorns buried deep,
my seeds are gone.
In their place,
stand rooted oaks,
ready to withstand the seasons
without me.
