Who I Am and Was
By Georgie Lee Blalock III
I reconciled with myself
but despite the forgiving
we still aren’t friends.
She watches me suspiciously
as I pull weeds on the weekend,
sleep on Saturday night.
I don’t trust the way she hunches over her notebook,
scribbling at the future.
We keep the peace by biting our tongues
until she whispers a snide remark
as I chose my child instead of a career,
or I criticize her high heels
and books.
She blames me for giving up.
I blame her for unrealistic dreams
and for trying.
