Passion Creates Future Role Models
by Tracy Lyn Moland

Whether it’s a high five from Samuel Jackson, a cancelled interview due to terrorist scares or providing expert advice, parenting guru Stacy DeBroff leads a very exciting life. Just trying to track her down for an interview in the midst of a 10-city media tour as the spokesperson for Office Depot’s “Organize to Learn” campaign was nearly impossible. However a certain group of people do not have to compete for this mom writer’s time – her family. With weekly media appearances including being a regular on The Today Show, to running a successful business, to consulting with multinational companies, Stacy is first and foremost a mother and wife. She lives with her husband Ron, 13-year-old daughter Kyle and 12-year-old son Brooks. “Everyone tells me I am so lucky because I have such nice kids,” DeBroff says. “But it goes beyond luck and does take some effort. My office is right there. I am always available to my kids.”

Eight years ago, Stacy, in the midst of a successful career as a lawyer and a teacher at Harvard, felt like she had accomplished her goals and that it was time to reinvent herself. Her career in law was a tribute to her father who died, along with her mother, in a plane crash when Stacy was 12 years old. The decision to be more available to her kids, who were four and five years old at the time, felt like a tribute to her mother, a children’s book author who worked at home. “I also knew that I have way too much energy to be a full time mom. I would drive my kids crazy,”

From home, she worked on her first book, a family organizer, and created the website MomCentral.com, as a community for mothers. Stacy wanted to focus specifically on moms because as a mom she relates directly to them.

“Women are caught between work and a natural inclination to nurture. It is complicated to reconcile these two worlds,” DeBroff explains. A modern woman can be everything from a career woman to a stay-at-home mom. However, many women try to have it all, and this is where the problems arise. DeBroff calls it “halving it all, instead of having it all.”

MomCentral.com and the organizer were just the start for Stacy. Being a successful Mom Writer and business owner means always being in motion. By continuing to grow, learn and expand as a person, Stacy has been able to continually find new ways to help mothers learn to simplify and prioritize their lives. Stacy’s second work was The Mom Book: 4278 Tips for Moms which sold 100,000 copies. With the success of her second book, her dedication helped her cascade into a new role. Companies like Target, K-Mart, and Whirlpool, to name a few, started to approach Stacy to be their corporate spokesperson. “I am really careful in choosing the brands I work with,” she says. “I only decide to promote products if they resonate with my vision.” Stacy has also written two more books and works with companies in a consulting role helping them create their mom marketing strategies.

Stacy’s Advice for Mom Writers:
Being a writer and an author creates credibility for a mom writer. By using this credibility, mom writers can move into the media stream and flow with it. It starts local in print and radio, then to local television, and then slowly expands into wider circles – local cities, your state or province and finally nationally. By increasing awareness many new opportunities open up for mom writers and entrepreneurs.

Networking is also crucial to increasing success for mom writers. Women are very supportive of each other and the bigger the network you have – both offline and online – the more success you will find.

Finally, there needs to be fluidity in how we balance our lives. We need to be available to our children while still following our passions. A mother who is passionate about her career, her writing or her business will find herself able to deal with life’s issues in a much stronger way. Today’s mothers are creating the future. They are the new role models as they have the ability to craft their own lives. Moms are able to lead exciting careers while being at home with their children. They are learning to straddle both worlds – working mom and stay at home mom – while teaching their children that they too need to be passionate and do what they love.

Thank you, Stacy, for such insightful advice and inspiration. Stacy is a real mom living in a real world. She has many of the struggles we all face, but by being passionate, realistic and positive, she is a role model to many!
